You start a band and think you've got direction. You sing like this, write songs like that, and have a bunch of influences which you're *obviously* just like. You think you've got a sound which is just like other kinds of music. You guess you have a genre, so you pick one or two and then do some more guessing. You try to figure out where you're going before you've even left, thinking that nothing changes and what's done is done.
And then a few years later you realise that no one thinks your music is anything like that at all. They've made their own minds up about 'what you're like'.
Just had a tip-off from a guy on Twitter complaining that when he listens to our stuff on last.FM it keeps feeding him tons of bluegrass. We like country music (well, I guess you'd call it Americana) but we're not sure we want people to be listening to fiddly banjo tunes straight after 'Girl You Never Knew'. And on iTunes it says we're country (our fault) and on other sites we've got to be honest, it's always been hard to know what to fill in those little boxes that ask for easy but impossibly complicated information such as 'genre' (please pick ONE), sub-genre (please pick ONE of these which don't fit at all) and of course our favourite box 'Other artists you sound like' - which always has us completely baffled.
So basically, we're too close to what we do to form any reasonable opinion. Help!
Now some of these questions, boxes and 'tags' may appear completely obvious to everyone except us, so we've decided to ask the questions - Who are we? What genre(s) are we? Who do we sound like?
Because we have no idea.
So please please help us by leaving some comments below. No one's ever really commented on this blog site yet (well it is a bit new) so go for it.
For example:
#genre: pop, metal, bluegrass, country
#soundslike: tom petty, the smiths, kiss
We're dead serious about this and we need your help - in this day and age it's the difference between being discovered in the appropriate places or really pissing people off. Please try and be sensible. We know you actually want to type in stuff like #genre: flowerpot, undergarments, solar flare - but we're serious, we do need some real input!
