1. Bandcamp - for your music sales and widgets
Put your music on here and get it to look how you like in an instant. Features a plethora of sales features, stats and lots of cool stuff that'll make you wonder why no one ever did it this way in the first place. Of course you want to get your music on iTunes and other online stores, but that's going to cost you money. Get your stuff up onto Bandcamp first, and enjoy messing about with all the interesting stuff it lets you do - it's almost like a lesson in progressive thinking when you simply look through all the options it gives you.

3. Posterous - for your blog
There are many blog services out there which allow you to create an instant blog, but Posterous takes the prize as the blog tool most likely to get you actually posting stuff. Sure there are sites like Tumblr and it's pretty easy to create your own Wordpress blog nowadays, but Posterous just makes things so easy it's almost impossible NOT to create a steady stream of blog posts.Posterous wins on ease of use and is the service most likely to get you up to speed if you've always wondered what the heck to write about.

4. Twitter - for finding new fans and opportunities
If you're not using the free service Twitter then you better get a move on. Although at first glance it looks rather baffling, simply following a few hundred of your favourite bands and seeing how they're doing things will get you up to speed. Use the search option and look for stuff you're interested in as if you were doing a Google search, and avoid following companies. Twitter is about real people, and those real people are potential fans. You'd be crazy not to do it. If you're looking to get fans in your area, do a local search.

5. Facebook page - to use as your forum
Creating a Facebook page is now relatively straightforward and as so many people are on Facebook (like, you and all your friends for starters) that getting people to 'join' your Facebook page is pretty easy and only takes one click for people to sign up. It's a good place to share larger chunks of information and can act as part forum / part bridge between your blog and Twitter activities.

6. Reverb Nation - for your mailing list
Reverb Nation does a million and one things nowadays, but still its best features is free mailing lists. They're fairly straightforward to use, and it gives you enough stats to be getting on with. We must admit we think we're seeing the mailing list gradually die as a 'must have' band feature simply because of the amount of other connectivity available - quite often we find we're sending out emails as a summary of all the stuff most people already knew we're up to. Perhaps that's a good way to look at it nowadays, but people have got so used to reading bite size chunks of information as they occur we do wonder when the era of the mailing list will be over.

7. YouTube - for your videos
This is pretty obvious really! You need to start a band channel - make sure it's got your name in it so it's easily searchable by Google, and explore the idea of using YouTube as a video blog as well as a place to show of your latest music video creations. You could sit around all day trying to figure out how to create the best ever viral video but our advice to new bands is to post often, post frequently, and keep it simple.
8. Livestream - for your real time performances
OK you've got everyone's attention but you need to create some kind of urgency. Getting people to watch your streaming performance live as it occurs is a great way to get even a few people to wake up and tune in at a certain time. Livestream makes it incredibly easy, you can pull in your YouTube videos with the click of a button and alternate between pre-recorded footage and live streams, and even switch between different cameras that you have connected to your machine - even by Wifi. It's kind of mind-boggling how cool this stuff is.
9. Joomla / Wordpress / Drupal - for your website
OK if you've got the last 8 things sorted out you need to somehow pull all that information together into one place. You need to register your domain name (myincredibleband.com) and get a site up. We've used Joomla for years but we've gradually used it's features less and less as more and more cool sites like the ones we've mentioned have come along. Now we use it mainly as a linking ground to pull all the other sites together. You may not like the idea that all your stuff is spread across the internet and get the feeling that you'd like to consolidate it all and put it all into website. Resist that temptation and stop wasting time trying to attract potential fans to your lair - nowadays it's all about going where the audience IS - and with more limited attention spans than ever before, you're better off talking to them where they like hanging out, instead of wasting time and effort trying to move the conversation elsewhere.

10. Google Analytics - to track your progress
Even though it's very hard to really know how well you're doing with your whole band on the internet thing, it's still nice to be able to look at pretty maps and look at charts - as long as you don't become obsessed with it. Worrying about web hits is not at all as useful as actually trying to WRITE a hit, so don't make the mistake of turning into a check-monster who needs to look at his stats every five minutes. Google Analytics is pretty easy to use and plugs easily into a Posterous blog, and in our opinion it is your blog that should really be attracting the most hits. Facebook pages have an exhaustive raft of analytics built in, as does Bandcamp.
