This one can be filed under 'Why didn't I sort this out years ago'.
Are you fed up with words like 'materialise' being spellchecked to 'materialize' on your Mac the whole time? I'd never got around to investigating why, even though it's bugged me for years. And it's so easy to fix I now feel like a complete idiot for not doing it sooner.
1. Open up System Preferences
2. Click 'International'
3. Make sure you have the 'Language' tab open
4. On the left is a list of languages. The top one is probably English. It needs to be 'British English'.
(The one that is simply called 'English' should in fact be called 'American English' so people who don't live in the USA realise they have the option to change it. Bad Apple.)
5. Click the 'edit list' button on the right
6. Un-tick 'English'
7. Go down the list and tick 'British English' and click OK
8. Make sure the main list now has 'British English' at the top
9. Done
10. Do something nice for Georgia Wonder. If you're excited about this article we've probably just saved you hair loss over the next five years.
