ABOUT BECOMING THE 14TH MOST SHARED BAND IN THE WORLD (FOR A WEEK!)
Steph: 'When we put our EP up on Frostwire we had no idea what was going to happen. The promotion started running and we kept our eyes firmly glued to Pirate Bay to see if we appeared anywhere, let alone in a position worth talking about. When we first broke into the top 100 we realised that not one other unsigned band was listed there - it was all taken up with extremely well known bands.'
Julian: 'Getting into the top 50 was quite something, but then seeing the downloads increase and ending up in 14th position sandwiched between the entire back catalogue of Metallica above us and the much publicised Katy Perry just below us was amazing. We were 4 positions above Led Zeppelin's entire works, and just a few positions below The Beatles discography. We're still not sure what it means but it was very exiting!'
ABOUT THEIR ELECTION NIGHT GIG AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY LONDON
Julian: 'It was great to be invited to play at the UK's biggest party on US election night at the London American Embassy! The whole place was packed full of reporters and you could cut the tension with a knife. We had to forget about that twice because we did two sets!'
Steph: 'It was also a pleasure to share the stage with Glen Tillbrook from Squeeze who was also playing, as well as The Men They Couldn't Hang. We took turns watching the other bands and sneaking off to the packed cinema where people were watching history unfold on CNN.'
ABOUT SUPPORTING SIMPLY RED / MICK HUCKNALL
Steph: 'When we got the Wentworth gig it was pretty scary as playing in front over over 1500 people was our biggest gig to date. We'd never done the 'long walk' to the stage before, and it was nice to have our own lovely dressing room for a change!'
Julian: 'It was an even bigger surprise when we were offerered to support Mick's band on his 'Tribute To Bobby' tour. We got to play to people in Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Leicester, Ispwich and London, and although it was all a bit overwhelming to start with, by the end we wanted it to keep going even though opening to crowds of 2500 - 3000 people was a bit daunting at first.'
ABOUT WINNING THE BEST SONG CATEGORY AT THE GOLDEN PLECTRUM AWARDS
Steph: 'There were lots of good bands with good songs and as we'd been put forward for three awards and didn't think we were going to win any of them we started drinking a bit too early. So when we won 'Best Song' for 'Hello Stranger' it was a complete surprise. We just stared at each other a lot, and then went up on stage where Julian completely forgot to thank everyone he wanted to.'
Julian: 'When you watch award ceremonies on telly you think that the look of shock and awe has been rehearsed, but I can tell you that my look of shock and awe was completely impromptu and that alone caused me to have memory loss. Now I know why people get slaughtered at awards shows, it's too stressful not to!'
ABOUT BEING PLAYED ON BBC RADIO TWO
Steph: 'Julian had tried to contact Bob Harris via the BBC website and wasn't expecting any response at all. After the stock email reply we thought we'd leave Bob alone. It was a bit of a shock when he got back to us.'
Julian: 'What we didn't realise was a friend of Bob's had become a fan of ours a while back, and they bumped into each other at a charity gig a few days later. We we mentioned, and the email jogged Bob's memory, and he played us on his show shortly after. Two weeks in a row as well!'
ABOUT PLAYING LIVE ON BBC RADIO SOLENT / SOUTHERN COUNTIES
Steph: 'We were both really looking forward to playing live on the BBC, but the traffic to Brighton was terrible and we got more and more nervous. By the time we got there it was such a mad rush that we both had the jitters, and there's nothing more disconcerting than a radio producer shouting 'one minute' at you and watching the red light go on when you've only just figured out where you are!'
Julian: 'We were fine for the first couple of songs and as some of our friends had turned up it was quite a laugh, but then Steph had this moment when she suddenly realised we were on the BBC and it was important, and had a last minute panic! She was scribbling down the words to our song 'Destroy' at the very last minute as her panic eroded her memory away. But we got there in the end.'
ABOUT PLAYING A LESBIAN TSUNAMI FUNDRAISER GIG
Steph: 'That gig was flippin' hilarious. For a start everyone had kind of gone there to get drunk, so no one was really listening, and at the time the things we did acoustically were very small and required listening. So we're picking and singing away and no one really knows we're on.'
Julian: 'Most of the clientelle had come to support their friends and not us, as we were on just after a Liza Minelli impersonator and a DJ who was as camp as Christmas, so they let us have another go and tried to get everyone to shush a bit. It didn't work, but we helped raise a bit of money hopefully!'
